High School Class of 2026 Newsletter
As your junior year progresses, it’s time to start thinking ahead to your college applications. Here are some essential steps and reminders to set you up for success:
- Update or Create Your Resume
A well-crafted resume is a key tool for showcasing your achievements, extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, and work experience. Use this time to:
- Add recent accomplishments
and activities
.
- Organize entries by category (e.g.,
academics,
athletics,
volunteer work).
- Highlight leadership roles and significant contributions
.
- Keep it concise—one page is ideal
.
If you’ve never created a resume, start with a simple template and focus on the basics. Tools like Canva, Resume Genius, Google Docs, or Microsoft Word offer excellent templates.
ICYMI: Some colleges allow you to attach your resume to your application, which is an excellent opportunity to highlight your unique accomplishments, leadership experiences, and skills beyond what the application typically allows.
- Create Your Common App Profile
The Common Application opens doors to over 1,000 colleges and universities. Set up your account now at www.commonapp.org to:
- Familiarize yourself with the platform
.
- Begin filling in your personal information, education details, and activities section
.
- Save yourself time later by entering information incrementally
.
- Prepare for the Common App Essays
March is just around the corner, which means releasing the Common App essay prompts! These essays are your chance to share your story and make an impact. Here’s how to get ahead:
- Review the prompts as soon as they’re available
.
- Determine which essays the schools you’re applying to require.
- Brainstorm ideas
and select a topic that reflects who you are
.
- Draft, revise, and seek feedback—strong essays take time to develop
.
- Request Letters of Recommendation
Your teachers are crucial partners in your college application journey. Start thinking about which teachers know you well and can speak to your abilities and character. Tips for requesting recommendations:
- Ask early! Teachers have many students and may limit the number of letters they write.
- Provide them with your updated 🗎 resume and a summary of your goals
.
- Write a polite and thoughtful email
or meet with them in person
to make your request.
- Remember: The Application Process Starts in Spring
Although applications open in the summer or fall, much of the groundwork begins now:
- Stay focused on your academics
—your junior year grades matter significantly
.
- Continue building meaningful relationships with teachers
, mentors
, and counselors
.
- Research
colleges and start creating a list of schools that interest you.
