🎓 "I Don't Know…" is a Real Answer—Now Let's Work With It

As cap-and-gown photos flood your feed, college decision posts are everywhere, and graduation party invites start piling up, it’s easy to feel like everyone else has it all figured out.

But here’s the truth:

Not everyone does. And that’s okay.

If your honest answer to “What are you doing after high school?” is “I don’t know,” you’re not behind. You’re not lost.

You’re simply in a different part of the process.

Some students know their path early. Others need more time to explore.

Both are valid. Both are normal.

To the Parents:

You might feel like you didn’t do enough—or even question whether you failed your child somehow.

Please hear this: You haven’t.

Take it easy on yourself—and on your student. This is hard for them, too.

They may not always show it or say it out loud, but imagine what it feels like to watch your friends announce big plans and bold dreams while you’re sitting with uncertainty.

That pressure? That comparison? It’s heavy. And it hurts.

They need your belief, not your worry. Your presence, not perfection.

To the Students:

You might feel sad, frustrated, anxious, or even angry that you don’t have a plan—especially when it seems like everyone else does.

Let me remind you of something important:

You’re not alone. And more importantly, this is not the end of your story.

I’ve been there—as a parent—even with the work I do every day.

And I can say this with complete honesty:

It gets better.

Clarity doesn’t always come with a deadline. It comes with time, support, and small steps forward.

Sometimes, it just takes a little longer to figure things out—and that’s not a weakness.

That’s real life.

Progress doesn’t always look like a college acceptance letter or a 5-year plan.

Sometimes, progress is curiosity. A single conversation.

Or even just the courage to say, “I don’t know… yet.”

So What Can You Do Right Now?

Even if you’re still figuring things out, here are a few small actions that can help you move forward:

  • 🔍 Explore careers – What fields or roles make you curious? Follow that interest.

  • 🛠️ Research trade schools – High-demand, hands-on careers offer stability, great pay, and purpose.

  • 🎖️ Consider the military – It offers structure, training, benefits, and career pathways.

  • 🧠 Take a career assessment – Discover options aligned with your strengths and values.

  • 🗣️ Talk to real people – Ask professionals how they got where they are—and what they learned along the way.

Final Thought:

This isn’t a season of pressure—

It’s a season of possibility.

The path may not be clear right now, but every step you take—no matter how small—brings you closer to who you’re becoming.
